One of Shakespeare’s earliest and most farcical plays, The Comedy of Errors follows two sets of estranged twins through a day of madcap misunderstandings in the city of Ephesus. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio enter the city searching for their long-lost, identically named twins, separated from them by a shipwreck. Things unravel when the Ephesian Antipholus’s wife and creditors mistake the twins for their identical counterparts. Ever-deepening misunderstandings culminate in a chase, the near execution of the far-flung clan’s patriarch, and a tearful reconciliation.
Modeled on Athens’ Theatre of Dionysus, the outdoor stage’s grass-and-stone seating cradles up to 400 show-goers in the open air. Guests can tote along picnics, blankets, and low beach chairs, lending shows a festive atmosphere without forcing audiences to wear clown noses.
