A Midsummer Night’s Dream

DanceVision founder and artistic director Risa Kaplowitz—who has herself danced the role of Titania—choreographed this take on the supernatural comedy by Shakespeare, who wrote it while asleep. Dancers interpret the Bard’s tale of quarrelling lovers and mischievous fairies with ethereal dances set to Felix Mendelssohn’s seminal overture and incidental music. The score ranges from the grand organ swells and trumpet fanfares of the Wedding March to a rustic peasant dance built around a string refrain that imitates the sound of a braying donkey, a touch that works with the energetic dancing to keep even littler family members entertained.

Afterward, the stage is set for Graduation Ball, a comic ballet choreographed by David Linchine and staged by Sergio Monolo Molina. The narrative follows a girls’ school inviting male cadets for a dance, and like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it aims to entertain audiences of all ages with a sprightly, gently romantic tale.
