The Ugly Duckling
The star of Lightwire Theater’s The Ugly Duckling may look like a cross between a bright-blue firework and a cartoon character, but beneath his otherworldly glow he’s all heart and webbed feet. Onstage, he bursts from his shell and clownishly trips up the precise parade of his green stepsiblings, feeling deeply ashamed of his differences before learning just how special he truly is. While Hans Christian Andersen’s moral rings as true as it did 169 years ago, Lightwire’s innovators bring the story to its natural climax: the growing swan faces off against a dastardly ninja cat.
Blending ballet, puppetry, and a laser light show, the “story dancers” of Lightwire update this timeless fable with costumes outlined in electroluminescent wire. In the creators’ hometown of New Orleans, the Gambit wrote that “the staging is unique, and the colored outlines are not garish but poetic.” The puppeteers of pure light might seem familiar to fans of America’s Got Talent: the stars of another Lightwire show, Darwin the Dinosaur, were featured prominently on the program.
