Tamburlaine, Parts I & II

Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan contemporary and influencer of Shakespeare, looked to the life of Central Asian emperor Timur when writing his war epic, Tamburlaine. At the start of the play, the title character is a nomadic shepherd and bandit in Scythia, but the Persian emperor wants him dead. When a party comes to do the deed, though, Tamburlaine convinces them to join him in overthrowing the emperor—beginning a life that would be defined by bloodshed. Though met with fierce opposition, his force of will leads him to rule half the world.

Revived many decades after its last major New York production in 1956, this play benefits from the expert guidance of director Michael Boyd, a four-time winner of the Olivier Award who’s served as the artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. OBIE and Drama Desk winner John Douglas Thompson stars, calling upon his internationally-acclaimed classical acting skills to conjure the shrewd and aggressive Tamburlaine.

About Theatre for a New Audience

Theatre for a New Audience has been turning new audiences into loyal audiences for more than three decades. Called "the most sophisticated purveyor of revivals in the major Off-Broadway leagues" by the New York Times' Charles Isherwood, the company has racked up nominations and awards from Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle for its stagings of both Shakespearean and contemporary plays alike. And the company doesn't just treat audiences to performances by F. Murray Abraham and Kathleen Chalfant, or productions guest-directed by Tony winners Julie Taymor and Bartlett Sher. It also introduces public-school students to Shakespeare through hands-on workshops—a less haunting introduction to The Bard than a Ouija-board interview.
