The Program

Guest conductor Emil de Cou leads the ASO in a night of contemplative classics, joined by world-famous violinist Sarah Chang, whose nimble bow work has accompanied the New York Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic.

 • Giacchino—Music from Up: The composer of the music for Ratatouille and The Incredibles, Michael Giacchino has scored the adventures of many beloved Pixar characters. In Up, his melodies evoke the dreamlike drifting of Carl Fredricksen’s house through the sky, as well as the obsessive wanderlust of explorer and film villain, Charles F. Muntz
 • Mussorgsky—Dawn on the Moscow River: Mussorgsky wrote this peaceful evocation of daybreak for an otherwise tumultuous opera about the Khovanshchina rebellion against Peter the Great
 • Copland—Suite from Billy the Kid: Melding traditional cowboy songs from the old west with playful classicality, Copland’s ballet retells the story of one of America’s greatest outlaws and worst-behaved kids
 • Barber—Adagio for Strings: Instantly recognizable from its use in tragic films such as The Elephant Man and Platoon, the ballooning swell of Adagio for Strings has become a melodic byword for grief
 • Bruch—Violin concerto no. 1: Violinist Sarah Chang solos throughout one of the most popular concertos in the repertoire, begun when Bruch was only 19 years old

Alexandria Symphony Orchestra

When Kim Allen Kluge took over as music director of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra in 1987, the outfit was made up of a small but enthusiastic group of community musicians. Sensing the potential of the orchestra, Kluge augmented the ensemble with freelancer virtuosos, quickly establishing the ASO as the premier professional symphony in northern Virginia. Today, the collective performs in the elegant Schlesinger Concert Hall on the Northern Virginia Community College campus, which makes for an acoustically friendly venue and a convenient base of operations for pranks on the Dean.
