In its inaugural season, the Tom Tom Founders Festival has snagged more than 50 bands to celebrate the culmination of a month’s worth of music, art, and innovation. On Friday, May 11, The Walkmen draw crowds to Main Street Arena in advance of the band’s imminent seventh album, Heaven. Expectations are high for the critically beloved quintet, whose new song has been named by Pitchfork as a Best New Track and whose previous release placed on the music site’s Best New Music of 2010 list for its compelling sound “rooted in a scrappy, scratchy New York tradition that dates back to the Velvet Underground or Bob Dylan. Later that night, Eliot Lipp extends the party past the midnight hour with his hybrid of ’90s hip-hop and house.
On Saturday, The Haven hosts the feverish guitar and swirling synthesizer of Here We Go Magic. After that set, Josh Ritter plucks forth the folksy melodies and Cohen-esque lyrics that landed him on Paste’s list of 100 Greatest Living Songwriters, and DJ Tigran Mimosa spins the evening to a close.
The festival’s name pays homage to Thomas Jefferson, who famously quipped, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past” as he scrawled the Declaration of Independence across a first edition of Herodotus’s writings. Festival founder Paul Beyer, a Charlottesville native, imbues the whole event with his hopeful, future-oriented outlook, lining up a talk on “place-based innovation” and a Locavore Expo to supplement the tunes. As he told C-Ville, “Music has this ability to draw people together, and hopefully give more prominence to other conversations going on in the community.”
