Tommy Tune: Taps, Tunes and Tall Tales
“It’s hard to resist the Colgate-bright charm and joyous energy of Tommy Tune, so why try?” the New Yorker declares. It's good advice, too. In his 50-year career on the Great White Way, Tommy Tune has bowled over audiences and melted hearts, earning along the way nine Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk awards, the National Medal of the Arts, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What's more: in 2009 the state of New York designated Tune a living landmark, elevating him to the ranks of Brooke Shields and the George Washington head on Mount Rushmore.
In this autobiographical show lauded by the New York Times, this effervescent Broadway veteran weaves personal stories into tap-dancing routines and golden show tunes accompanied by Michael Biagi on piano. His tales touch on performances with other Broadway greats, including Charles Coles and favorite duet partner Twiggy, while his songs showcase his effortless vocal prowess. As he breezes through 20 numbers culled from his hit “My One and Only” as well as the more than one thousand performances that followed, Tune brings to mind a modern Fred Astaire with a twangy Texan's charm.
