The Torbay Theatre, a working hand of the Torbay Museum, presents two riveting productions that infuse the spectacle of drama with local history and folklore. Written and directed by local playwright Ben Pittman, 1762 tells of the bitter struggle between the French and English armies as they sought to claim Newfoundland for their own in the Seven Years War. The play’s focal point rests on four Torbay residents who led a ragtag army of musketeers to stave off tyranny, rescue their loved ones, and defend their homeland. The play’s outdoor setting lends an air of authenticity to the unfolding drama, which crowds can watch from the comfort of their own blankets, lawn chairs, or foldaway fainting couches.

Another Ben Pittman production, Treasure Cove: A Torbay Musical invites audiences to sit by the fire as Skipper Jack spins tales more colourful than a dive bar full of sentient rainbows. Bloodthirsty buccaneers share stage time with superstitious fishermen as the son of explorer John Cabot follows in his father’s treasure-seeking footsteps. Music from the Northeast Avalon fills the intimate Kinsmen Centre theatre in this energetic exploration of Newfoundland’s piratical past.
