Tower of Power
On the opening track of its 1973 self-titled album, Tower of Power asks, “What is hip?” A booming quartet of horns tries to answer, the soulful guitar line searches along several lines of inquiry—and the call-and-response vocals ultimately refuse to give any firm answers, noting that “what’s hip might become passé.” But that wisdom has not been borne out in Tower of Power’s astonishing 43-year career, which has outlasted cultural shifts and filled dance floors with several generations at once. Still led by founder Emilio Castillo, the 10-piece funk outfit plugs into tracks like “Knock Yourself Out” and “Clean Slate” with as much energy “as if they were a young band just trying to get a break,” according to the Orange County Register’s Soundcheck blog.
