Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue performing "Backatown"
  • How bandleader Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews describes the band’s genre: “supafunkrock”
  • What that means, besides the name of Germany’s largest cavern: New Orleans jazz, plus some extra funk and soul, plus louder guitars, all blown up to arena size
  • How the Austin Chronicle summed up Shorty’s appeal in a 2010 review: “An incredible horn player and surprisingly effective singer, Shorty commands the stage with the swagger of an MC, his opening horn stabs hitting as hard as any hip-hop beat and practically begging for a guest verse from Weezy.”
  • Where you’ve seen Trombone Shorty blow his horn: on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Austin CityLimits, and in a recurring role on HBO’s Treme
  • Other artists who’ve shared the stage or the studio with Shorty: Eric Clapton, Lenny Kravitz, Dave Matthews Band, Rod Stewart, Janelle Monáe, and Cee Lo Green
  • Latest album likely to make your neighbors come and dance on your lawn: Say That to Say This

State Theatre

The State Theatre was saved, as its website states, from “the ravages of time.” Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue’s signature dome.
