The best concerts have lots of pyrotechnics, which is why classical pianists always wear asbestos pants. Insulate yourself from boredom with today’s GrouponLive deal to see the "Tschaikowski" St. Petersburg State Orchestra perform at State Theatre in New Brunswick on Sunday, February 12, at 3 p.m. For $15, you get one ticket for the best available seating in the premium-orchestra, mid-orchestra, premium-loge, or front-balcony sections (up to a $70 value).

As part of a transcontinental tour, Maestro Roman Leontiev conducts an ensemble that deftly soars through pieces from legendary composers of the baroque and contemporary periods. With guests cradled in the historic theater's seats under a crystal chandelier, pianist Alexandre Pirojenko will dance over notes from Chopin's Concerto no. 2 in F minor. Later in the program, the soloist further displays his virtuosity in Symphony no. 5 in B-flat major by Prokofiev, whose work he performed in New York in 2004 to what the New York Times described as the "heartiest applause of the evening," next to intermission's T-shirt-cannon man. In the afternoon's other number, harps, flutes, and clarinets rustle before the full orchestra blossoms in Suite no. 2 from Ravel's ballet, Daphnis et Chloe.

As part of the State Theatre's complimentary pre-performance insight, American composer Raymond Wojcik speaks on the afternoon's program in the United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Patrons may also opt to indulge sweet teeth at the theater with a Thomas Sweet Chocolate tasting, which challenges guests to guess which chocolate piece conceals the string section's missing viola.

State Theatre New Jersey

The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
