When the first emperor of China was buried more than two millennia ago, he was not alone—an army of 8,000 clay soldiers joined him to protect and serve in the afterlife. In 1974, a group of well diggers discovered the tomb by accident, heralding decades of devoted research and reconstruction. Now a squadron of Qin Shihuangdi’s eternal army maintains a vigil in the Terracotta Warriors: Defenders of China’s First Emperor exhibit at Discovery Times Square, representing five of the six military ranks on guard in the tomb. Joining them on display are more than 200 artifacts from ancient China, including the U.S. premiere of golden chariot decorations and a ritual drinking vessel, as well as the world premiere of an ancient Han burial gate. Each of the soldiers is intricately detailed and boasts the lifelike specifications of a typical man: six feet tall and 600 pounds. Along with the statues comes their story, described by the New York Times as “an action-adventure narrative, part deep history, part archaeological romance.”
