The Scouting Report

In the first five games of the season, the Shock couldn’t catch a break; they lost four of those games by four points or fewer, struggling to close opponents out down the stretch. Three weeks later, the Shock appear to be a completely different team. They’ve won five of their last seven games, including a 105–99 overtime win against the Chicago Sky on June 22. In that game, second-year player Skylar Diggins scored a career-high 33 points and recorded six steals, reaffirming her place as one of the league’s rising superstars. The Shock have a chance to continue to make up ground with a pair of games against Western Conference foes, including the Phoenix Mercury, who sit second in the conference with a 9-3 record.

Tulsa Shock

The Tulsa Shock traces its roots back to 1998, when they entered the second WNBA season as the Detroit Shock. In the following decade, the Shock established itself as one of the league’s premier franchises, winning titles in 2003, 2006, and 2008. The team took its championship pedigree to Tulsa in 2010, where it fills a basketball-sized void in a city without a mayor capable of dunking or an NBA team.
