Twyla Tharp: A true living legend, Twyla Tharp has choreographed more than 150 major works in the last half-century, including dances, TV specials, movies, ballets, Broadway productions, and even figure-skating routines. She’s taken home a lot of hardware for her work, too, including a Tony, two Emmys, 19 honorary doctorates, and the 2004 National Medal of the Arts.
The program: It opens with Preludes and Fugues, a piece for twelve set to Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier that sends dancers springing across the stage in duets, trios, and ensembles. Tharp’s beloved Nine Sinatra Songs from 1982 closes the program: it portrays the arc of romantic relationships through seven different couples as dancers—glistening in costumes by Oscar de la Renta—swing, swirl, tango, and cha-cha to Frank Sinatra songs.
