Raised on a comedy diet of Richard Pryor and Chris Rock, Ty Barnett earned his standup chops scoring laughs from high school classmates on the south side of Chicago. But his career in comedy truly took off when he headed to the northwest, where he became a hit on college campuses, was named “Outstanding Performer” at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Fest, made it to the semi-finals on Star Search, and nearly unseated Josh Blue as the runner-up on season 4 of Last Comic Standing. Since then, Barnett’s brand of blunt, through-provoking comedy has been seen in P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy and on The Late Late Show and The Tonight Show.
When a comedian is compared to Lenny Bruce, Bill Maher, and George Carlin, it means he has something that others don’t: a risky, cerebral style of comedy that slices as it skewers. Evincing an unwavering skepticism in the face of religion, the paranormal, astrology, and the apocalypse, Ian Harris’s paint-stripping wit ensures belly laughs while also ruining his chances of being invited to a church potluck. Fortunately for him, he has plenty of other places to be, at least judging by his run as an L.A.-comedy staple and his appearances on Comedy Central and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
