Tyler Perry’s Madea On The Run

Madea, the character described as a “God-fearing, gun-toting, pot-smoking, loud-mouthed grandmother” by creator Tyler Perry, first endeared herself to audiences in the 2000 stage play I Can Do Bad All By Myself. After several movie incarnations—including a family reunion, a class reunion, and jail—Medea is back on the stage, and she’s in deep trouble. Wanted by police, Madea hunkers down under the guise of a caregiver to her friend Bam, who has just had hip-replacement surgery. In spite of the ruse, Madea soon discovers her presence and her humor-laced hard-knock lessons are actually needed by Bam and her struggling family.

Tyler Perry dons the white wig, multihued frocks, large spectacles, and uncouth charm of his signature character in his latest stage play, weaving lessons about perseverance, loyalty, and love with new songs he also penned. The Renaissance man, who’s racked up a slew of awards (such as 11 NAACP Image Awards) and magazine covers (including Essence with Oprah), returns to the theater after years behind and in front of the camera.
