The Scouting Report
Last season, the Bruins capped off a 28–9 record with a Pac-12 Tournament title and their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2008. Second-year head coach Steve Alford looks to continue that success going forward in command of a roster featuring eight returning upperclassmen. Among them is Bryce Alford, whose stellar play and perfect answers on the referees’ pop quizzes earned him a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. This young talent carries on a legacy of success that has placed 15 former Bruins in the current NBA, making UCLA one of the nation’s top-five college programs for cultivating active pro players.
Since 1919, UCLA’s storied athletic program has produced a slew of top-caliber athletes, including many Olympians and professional legends. With a women’s water polo title in 2007, UCLA became the first school to win 100 NCAA team titles. Over the years, school alumni have netted an unprecedented 250 Olympic medals. Former UCLA athletes have also gone on to become baseball superstars, basketball legends, and all-pro fantasy-football coaches. The Bruins football team plays its home games in the hallowed Rose Bowl Stadium, which has hosted five NFL Pro Bowls, Olympic and World Cup soccer matches, and multiple BCS National Championship games.
