The Scouting Report
In the 2013 campaign, the Mustangs posted a perfect 8-0 record during the regular season. They scored 50-plus points in each of those games except one—which just so happened to be against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Though the Mustangs emerged victorious from last year’s September showdown, it was one of their closest match-ups of the season. On October 9, the Golden Hawks will swoop into TD Stadium for a re-match with quarterback Will Finch and the high-powered Mustangs offense for this season’s version of the annual “Turkey Bowl.”
It wouldn’t be a true “Turkey Bowl” without food, so the game will feature their version of the best bird with a chicken wing contest to determine who has the best recipe. The day will also feature plenty of family-oriented festivities, including bounce houses and run-ins with JW the mascot.
Western Ontario Mustangs
Consistent winners of multiple provincial championships, the Western Mustangs charge the fields, courts, pools, rinks, and mats of their opponents in an endless pursuit of victory. Clad in purple, silver, and white, student athletes across 46 men’s and women’s varsity programs—including badminton, baseball, curling, hockey, and squash, among others—regularly rake in titles. Just for example, the cheerleading squad absolutely dominated from 1985 to 2006, winning 22 consecutive crowns before picking the streak back up two years later. In addition, the football team has appeared in the most Vanier Cup national championships of any team, making it to the title game 12 times and winning six times. During games, the massive university marching band plays along with the action, keeping the crowd going with the Western Mustangs Fight Song and shouting trick-play calls through their tubas.
