The recipient of numerous Tony Awards upon its Broadway debut in 1987 and subsequent revival in 2002, Into the Woods marries a number of Grimm’s fairy tales with the mellifluous touch of composer Stephen Sondheim. By presenting the plight of Cinderella as a bored housewife and a Rapunzel on the verge of madness, among other twists on familiar characters, the musical critiques the concept of "happily ever after" to alternately rollicking and yearning musical accompaniment.
The play's real-life setting seems almost as mythical as the world Sondheim has created, as it is staged in The Maritime Museum of BC's 19th century Provincial Courtroom, which theatregoers reach via the magical conveyance of a birdcage elevator drawn up by very strong birds. Once they've reached the third-floor, carved-wood perch, they hardly need to worry about which of the velvet benches to take—once the action starts, the 15-person cast of veteran local performers roams and dances throughout the entire space.
