The smooth lyrics, percussive backbeat, and melodious, autotune-free lyrics of ‘90s hip-hop and R & B rebound at The Fresh Music Festival. A pioneer of the early hip-hop scene, human beatbox Doug E. Fresh hosts the night’s lineup of artists. His vocal imitations of drum machines weave with samples of hip-hop classics and pop-culture shoutouts to produce hits such as “The Show” and “La Di Da Di.” Keith Sweat also takes the stage, leveraging the vocals and smooth beats that rocketed singles such as “Just Me” and “Twisted” to the top of the Billboard R & B charts. Literal blood brothers K-Ci & JoJo grew up singing in their father’s gospel group, and these soulful roots show through in their smash hit and ultimate slow-dance song “All My Life.” Heating up the mic, the recently reunited Guy slings its signature new jack sound, and SWV’s ladies open a catalog of hits that includes “I’m So Into You,” performing ahead of their imminent fourth album.
