V8 Supercars Austin 400
A stampede of cars thunders down the grand-prix-style track at Circuit of the Americas, power-sliding around hairpin turns and reaching speeds of up to 185 mph on the straightaways. Known as V8 Supercars, these steeds are the chrome-coated thoroughbreds of Australia’s premiere motorsport category. On May 18 and 19, the Aussies travel to Austin for a weekend of 28-car races. Though the Australian Supercars represent the main event, the full schedule of races also showcases German Porsches and Italian Pirelli GT3s, bringing together cars from all over the world as if to recreate the heated tricycle races in the UN Assembly Hall.<p>
Circuit of the Americas
Designed to accommodate the growing interest in Grand Prix racing in the United States, the Circuit of the Americas pits thumping hearts against squealing tires on a 3.4-mile circuit track that can accommodate up to 120,000 fans. The first track of its kind in the United States, the circuit challenges reflexes with novel turns and 133 feet of elevation changes, forcing drivers to make quick decisions without first consulting the owner’s manual. Throughout the year, the track hosts a bevy of prestigious racing events—including the Formula 1 Grand Prix—as well as law-enforcement training, driving academies, and other educational programs.
