It looks better in the picture but looks ok in person. It reminds me of cheap light shows I saw in Asia when I was little. There are a few impressive displays though. Wont go again, but still a nice experience.

Loved the lanterns, they were impressive and a delight to see, however the organization for this event left much to be desired. We had to wait in line for 45 minutes in extremely cold temperatures to redeem our Groupon even though this had been paid for a month prior. There were only two kiosks open to handle all Groupon and regular ticket purchases all in the same line. As Groupon ticket holders had already paid a quicker system whereby our vouchers could be scanned and a ticket given for the free hot chocolate would have worked much better. By the time we got in we were not only freezing cold from so long waiting but also too late to catch the first of the shows as planned. By the time we'd seen all the lanterns it was nearly an hour before the next show and we were just too cold to wait. Also some of the food concessions were running out of food with an hour and a half to go before closing. It was obvious and disappointing to us that the event organizers were not geared up for the numbers attending.

The festival itself was nice and different. Not too busy, possibly from the cool weather. Hot chocolate was tasty. Disappointed that the Ferris wheel was not working as the groupon came with two ride tickets. And no explanation about the Ferris wheel until we asked.

It was pouring rain the night we went so it was hard to enjoy the experience. Besides the rain, there were a few great displays. The show was mediocre. Not being able to ride the ferris wheel was also a big disappointment.

The lanterns themselves were beautiful and that is the reason I give it four stars, however, this has far been the MOST disorganized event I have attended in the lower mainland. I found it incredibly inconvenient to make two separate lines, one to redeem the Groupon and one to enter the event. My party and I spent nearly 2 hours in line just to get in, even though we had purchased our tickets through Groupon. I should mention that I have attended other events at the PNE and this was by far the most disorganized from the onset. Just getting a parking spot was chaotic because there was no one around to guide you as to where to park, so other patrons essentially created their own parking spots, oftentimes blocking the laneways. I was also very disappointed with the amount of food trucks available. The event is advertised as one having many food vendors when the reality is that there were a few mediocre ones. Like I said, the lanterns themselves were beautiful and totally worth seeing, but I am skipping this event next time it comes around for the poor organization.

This was a wonderful experience. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it! We just wish the lines for the food and hot chocolate weren’t so long! We ended up leaving and heading to Lucy’s diner for eats afterwards. Still a great experience and very much so worth it!

About Vancouver Chinese Lantern Festival at the PNE

During the Vancouver Chinese Lantern Festival at the PNE, families and friends marvel at a collection of 35 intricately hand-crafted lanterns that tower over them.

  • The Lanterns: Colorful dragons, blooming gardens, and towering pagodas come to life when lit up with thousands of LED lights. The silk-draped lanterns, hand-painted and embellished by Chinese artisans, delight guests with their massive size and playful scenes, like a family of pandas climbing glowing bamboo stalks.
  • Entertainment: Nightly performances captivate visitors with awe-inspiring plate spinning, contortion, face changing, and traditional dance spectacles.
  • Food and Drink: Visitors sample handheld fare from food trucks that vend everything from authentic dim sum to hot dogs and red velvet donuts. Meanwhile, at the festival's bar, guests sip hot chocolate and steamy cappuccinos as those of-age warm up with hot toddies and hot-buttered rum.
