Virginia’s Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic brings together eight of the commonwealth’s top collegiate basketball programs to the hard court to compete for commonwealth bragging rights in a four-game exhibition scheduled over two seasons. At this year’s event, the action tips off with a showdown between the University of Richmond Spiders and the George Mason University Patriots, who charmed basketball fans and water-cooler coworkers who enjoy saying “underdog” with their Cinderella run to the Final Four in 2006. The fast-paced hoops action continues into the evening when the Old Dominion University Monarchs square off against the University of Virginia Cavaliers—the only team in this year’s event to have made the NCAA Tournament last year. The Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic will benefit the Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
VCU Rams Athletics
In 2011, the VCU Rams athletics program emerged under the national spotlight's brightest bulbs when the men's basketball team advanced to the NCAA Final Four as an 11-seed. But while their Cinderella story may have made VCU a household name and bedtime story for sports-loving children, it is hardly the only instance of Rams' athletic success. Their women's basketball team went 23-10 last year and made it to the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Members of the Atlantic 10 Conference since 2012, the Rams don their black-and-gold uniforms to proudly represent their university at a number of fan-friendly facilities.
