The Plot

By turns touching, thought-provoking, and hilarious, The Whale follows the decline of Charlie, the 600-pound protagonist, confined to his Idaho apartment. Turning to fast food to escape the death of his boyfriend and failures of his past, Charlie's story emerges through conversations with visitors to his apartment. Guests include an enthusiastic Mormon missionary; his estranged daughter, Ellie whom he has not seen in 17 years; and his friend, Liz, who enables his self-destruction with food. Slowly revealing the gentle, wounded humanity in Charlie, the play was proclaimed a "high-caliber contemporary drama" by the Denver Post, and showcases the modern constructions of family and friends and how they along with religion shape our lives.

Behind the Scenes

A native of northern Idaho, playwright Samuel D. Hunter turns his perceptive eye on his homeland, eschewing the coastal fixation of most writers and virtually all penguins. His script for 2011's A Bright New Boise netted him an Obie award for playwriting and a Drama Desk nomination for best play. Director Joanie Schultz leads Victory Gardens' production, bringing the nuanced staging and emotional subtlety that led the Chicago Sun-Times to name her "one of the city's strongest and most stylistically adaptable directors."

Victory Gardens Theater

Victory Gardens Theater, a Tony winner for Outstanding Regional Theatre, produces world premiere productions. Since its multimillion dollar renovation of the Biograph Theater and its surrounding ectoplasm in 2006, Victory Gardens has called the historic landmark its home. One of the theater's 2010 premieres went on to become a Pulitzer Prize finalist. The Theater is devoted to artistic excellence and creating a vital and contemporary American Theater that is accessible to all people through its productions of fresh and challenging plays.
