The Scouting Report
Having clocked a team-high 53 points last season, veteran center Eric Staal will lead the Hurricanes back onto the ice this fall. And this time, he’ll have some new weapons, namely former Blackhawks forwards Kris Versteeg and Joakim Nordstrom, who should bolster the offense alongside Staal and youngsters like Elias Lindholm and Victor Rask. Though the offense sputtered at times last season, the Hurricanes defense was more consistent; in fact, it killed nearly 85% of penalties last year, fourth-best in the league. Later this month, the Hurricanes will dust off their skates and re-inflate their hockey sticks for a couple of preseason games before rumbling into the regular season in October.
