At the center of Grounded sits an unnamed Air Force pilot who loves nothing more than soaring through the “blue.” It’s there she feels most free—even while following orders and taking out enemies in Iraq—and it’s there she’s earned her cockiness, her pride, and her happiness. But just because her heart’s in the sky doesn’t prevent it from falling to earth—or falling for a man while she’s on leave. That’s exactly what happens, and shortly thereafter, she discovers she’s pregnant.
Soon, the pilot finds herself stuck in what she calls the “Chair Force” with a new baby at home and a desk job of sorts piloting drones over the Middle East. Her once-cherished “blue” is replaced by a screen, and the thrill of flying is replaced by safety and predictability. Making matters worse, the new job forces her to confront the horrors of war in ways she never had to previously. The end result, according to the New York Times, is “a nuanced and haunting portrait of a woman serving in the United States Armed Forces coming under pressure as the human cost of war, for combatants as well as civilians, slowly eats away at her well-armored psyche.”
Virginia Stage Company
Virginia Stage Company’s mission is to “enrich, educate, and entertain the region by creating and producing theatrical art of the highest quality.” This mission has lead VSC to become one of southeastern Virginia’s leading theater destinations, with more than 70,000 people a year attending their productions each year. This is partly because of the high quality of their productions, partly because of the many musicals that have premiered here before hitting Broadway, and partly because of its majestic location: Wells Theatre. Deserving of its National Register of Historic Places listing, this century-old testament to neoclassical Beaux-Arts architecture is a palace of ornate red and gold, frescoed ceilings, and hanging balconies that matches in grandeur what the Virginia State Company provides in splendor. In addition to performing at the Wells Theatre, VSC further lives up to its mission by performing around the community.
