La Favorite

Love triangles. Arias. Political rivalry. Arias about love triangles and political rivalry. This is La Favorite, Gaetano Donizetti’s four-act opera with medieval Spain as the backdrop and a mezzo-soprano at the helm—namely, the titular character, Léonor, who’s known as “la favorite” thanks to her smarts and beauty. Both of these qualities have captivated her secret paramour—the married king—as well as a monk named Fernand, who’s willing to abandon his way of life to be with her. Complicating matters further is the king’s father-in-law, Balthazar, whose opposition to divorce is bolstered by support from the Pope. On top of that, Fernand fights against a Moorish invasion at the behest of la favorite! The intrigue never ends, making the audience clench their seats and the clarinetists turn beet red.

The drama of this multilayered tale is enhanced thanks to acclaimed performers. Among them: Randall Bills as Fernand and la favorite herself, Kate Lindsey, who’s also lent her talents to the New York Philharmonic and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
