Entering their 15th year in the WNBA, the Washington Mystics tip off for another season of hoops led by Maryland alum Crystal Langhorne. From the season opener against the Chicago Sky on May 19 to the last home contest against the Indiana Fever on September 21, the schedule packs 17 home games into a full summer of sneakers squeaking on hardwood and balls swishing through clumsy referees’ outstretched hands. After attaining the league’s fourth-best scoring average in 2011 with 18.2 points per game, Langhorne anchors a squad that includes guard Jasmine Thomas. Comprised of kids aged 7–13, the Mystics Mayhem dance team entertains crowds throughout the season, along with Lucky the Rabbit and Pax the Panda, whose anthropomorphic high jinks surpass even Sonic the Hedgehog’s attempt to break the sound barrier in Chuck Taylor high-tops.

About Washington Mystics

As one of the WNBA's first expansion teams, the Washington Mystics first took their athletic wizardry to the court in 1998. Since then, the team has made six playoff appearances, beating out plenty of other teams that were too timid to play with a crystal basketball. The Mystics follow the direction of head coach Mike Thibault, the winningest active coach in the league and the second all-time coach to reach 200 wins.
