What You'll Get

The history of theater goes all the way back to the 1970s, when audiences were eager to see "living movies." See how far these unfilmed talkabouts have come in only 40 years with today's GrouponLive deal for a performance of Happy Days by WSC Avant Bard at Artisphere’s Black Box Theatre in Arlington. Choose from the following showtimes:

• For $12, you get one general-admission ticket for the performance on Thursday, September 1, at 7:30 p.m. (a $25 value).
• For $15, you get one general-admission ticket for the performance on Friday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. (a $30 value).
• For $15, you get one general-admission ticket for the performance on Saturday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m. (a $35 value).
• For $27, you get one general-admission ticket for the performance on Sunday, September 4, at 2 p.m. and a $24 credit for brunch—an appetizer and entree or the full brunch buffet—beginning at 8 a.m. at Domaso, located inside Hotel Palomar (up to a $54 value with a full-price ticket).

WSC Avant Bard, formerly the Washington Shakespeare Company, defends the American theater vanguard with avant-garde, evocative productions of time-tested and contemporary classics. A 50th-anniversary production of Samuel Beckett's heart-wrenching Happy Days, directed by returning drama captain Jose Carrasquillo, immerses audiences in the lives of husband Willie and his wife Winnie, who remains optimistic in the face of hardships, including the inexorable approach of death. All performances take place at Arlington's vibrant Artisphere, and general-admission seating ensures tardy show-goers won't disrupt performers by leaping over patrons in cacophonous rocket boots.

Sunday's matinee performance of Happy Days includes brunch at Hotel Palomar’s dining-room restaurant, Domaso, which helps satiate diners with sweet and savory menu items as well as nonalcoholic beverages. Strike a dramatic pose indicating hunger before breakfast edibles such as a toasted smoked-salmon bagel slathered in cream cheese, tomato, and capers ($13) or lunch-specific plates including Rappahannock oysters dressed in passion fruit and tiny, rotund trench coats ($2.70).
