Since 1969, the Weathervane Playhouse’s professional summer-stock theater has delighted the denizens of Newark with its productions of Broadway treasures. For the 2012 summer season, the Weathervane players act out a bevy of movie-based musicals and mysteries to keep theater fans enthralled. The breezy musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (June 2 and 5), based on the 1988 movie starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, whisks audiences to the French Riviera, where a pair of ruthless con artists test their wits in a battle to swindle $50,000 from a rich young heiress. Meanwhile, the rollicking farce Leading Ladies (June 16), from the author of Lend Me a Tenor, earns hearty laughs as Leo and Jack, two down-on-their luck Shakespearean actors, scheme to inherit millions from an elderly woman by pretending to be her nieces Maxine and Stephanie.
Singin’ in the Rain (June 30) reformats Gene Kelly’s film into a lively stage show that floods the aisles with music and romance in a salute to Hollywood’s Golden Age. Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (July 14), one of theater’s longest running whodunits, steers armchair sleuths through a sea of red herrings to catch a murderer, leading to a twist ending that still catches audiences off guard––like when the New Year’s ball drops on the Fourth of July. The Summer Season concludes with Legally Blond – The Musical (July 28), based on the smash Reese Witherspoon hit about a ditzy sorority girl’s comical quest to become a lawyer.
