"Weird Al" Yankovic
It’s not often a parody becomes as popular as its source. But that’s exactly what’s happened to many of the songs of “Weird Al” Yankovic. Besides having garnered three Grammys and 30 gold and platinum albums, his lyrics have the ability to permanently replace the original words in the mind of listeners. Some people may never hear Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” without singing “Eat It.” Others may know Yankovic’s smash hit “White and Nerdy” by heart but forget that it was a sendup of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’.”
Despite Yankovic’s lampoonery, he has always taken the music seriously. A gifted accordionist and singer, he is able to adapt his chords to the demands of nearly every genre. The same goes for his airtight rhythm section, which has played with him since 1982. Continuing the Alpocalypse Tour in support of his most recent hit album, he blurs the lines between a rock concert, a comedy show, and a pandemic of polka and giggle-gas. His set ranges from early Dr. Demento classics such as “My Bologna” to recent pokes at Lady Gaga in “Polka Face” and Miley Cyrus in “Party in the CIA.” Expect plenty of costume changes, as Yankovic dons a fat suit for the classic hit “Fat,” a peacock outfit to goof on Gaga, and a hat and beard for “Amish Paradise,” along with a Star Wars–themed finale featuring the hits “The Saga Begins” and “Yoda.”
