Every month, impresario Troy Dillinger and a rotating troupe of comedians, musicians, and other entertainers take control of a Highland Mall stage to put on what the Austin Chronicle has called “a scatological love-letter to the city.” The first 50 fans to arrive tuck into a free meal from the North Austin Trailer Yard, and a warm-up set by Kerry Awn prepares the audience for an evening of locally grown standup and language as blue as a Smurf holding its breath. Spurred by Dillinger’s foul mouth and ghoulish patter, headliner Bryan Gutmann takes the mic next with thoughtful insights on the inner life of people who peel out of driveways at midnight and the best practices for anthropomorphic-egg reconstruction. Featured on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, Gutmann is a frequent performer at The Velveeta Room, and he earned the title Funniest Person in Austin in 2007.
Lubricated by free brews (complemented by a BYOB policy), the audience gets in on the action later in the evening during a costume competition for a hotel voucher from Shiblee’s Travel. Next, Dillinger channels the TV hosts of his youth as he presides over “The Mating Game” and rewards the winning duo with an “around the world” date also facilitated by the travel agency.
