Incorporated in 2001 by an alliance of female theatre professionals, White Rooster Theatre promotes works by women writers that focus on life in Newfoundland. Written by lead actress Meghan Greeley of film-festival-darling Crackie, Kingdom tells the eerie fable of Nora, whose knowledge of the outside world is strictly policed by Sir, her captor. Nora has lived most of her life confined to a single room, with only a sprightly yet mysteriously secretive girl named Scout to keep her company. Sir’s elaborate web of fictions unravels as even he forgets the complicated rules that govern her life, and Nora begins to wonder just what might wait beyond her prison. Handled by a noteworthy cast of stage and screen stars, the high-concept curtain-raiser stays grounded in the performances of Greeley, Earle Grey Award–winner Andy Jones, and Marthe Bernard, who played Tinny Doyle on The Republic of Doyle. Off the stage, Chalmers Award–winning director Michael Waller helps to bring the performance to life so that audience members can examine the subjectivity of reality and cyborgs can learn what it means to feel emotion.
