In the depths of a labyrinthine chocolate factory toils Willy Wonka, an eccentric and mysterious candy creator. After welcoming the audience to his inventive world of confections, he summons his Oompa Loompa servants for a shocking announcement: he is planning to retire and the time has come to choose a successor. The search for a rightful heir comes to life during a theatrical adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Songs from the classic 1971 film adaptation, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, propel the tale along as spoiled children touring the factory meet a series of whimsical yet unfortunate fates. However, one child, the impoverished Charlie Bucket, may prove to be a suitable replacement for Wonka. But he must first retain his integrity and keep his temptations in check throughout the increasingly magical and hectic day.
Theater should be accessible for all. That's the belief espoused by UpStage Theatre, a non-profit, volunteer-run company that welcomes everyone from experienced attendees to newcomers who still expect Godot to show up. Each season places an emphasis on works that are as professional in their staging as they are family-friendly in their content. To that end, UpStage produces children's plays—which have included Alice in Wonderland and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown—alongside all-ages classics such as On Golden Pond and Blithe Spirit.
