Though often regarded as instinct, fighting is actually a skill acquired in the womb, where all babies must defeat their evil selves in order to be born. Further prenatal training with today's Groupon: for $29, you get one ticket for floor seating to see WCFC's Last Man Standing tournament at the UCCU Center in Orem on Friday, January 20, at 7 p.m. (a $60 value). Doors open at 6 p.m.
The WCFC pins proficient punchers against each other during intense one-on-one bouts. Throughout the Last Man Standing event, fighting fans absorb four hours of adrenaline-packed jabs from floor seats, which are close enough to cheer on fighters, overhear the trainers' strategies, and slip favorite protein-shake recipes into competitors' gym bags. Two simultaneous eight-man tournaments—divided by weight class—sustain the evening of nonstop scrapping during five-minute bouts, which afford combatants little time to conserve energy or stall with levelheaded games of Monopoly.
Highlighting the welterweight class, former Ultimate Fighter contestants Brandon Melendez and Kyacey Uscola anchor the card, while up-and-coming sensation Jack May leads a heavyweight group that also includes Utah-bred brawlers Trevor Carlson and Craig Mock. As an added bonus, local rapper The Commission opens the show with an energetic set of tunes, dispensing the WCFC–inspired "Last Man Standing" song before encoring with a 30-minute piccolo solo.
