Yale’s varsity Bulldogs look to skate and dribble their way through the winter sports season. Yale graduate Keith Allain enters his sixth year leading the men’s hockey team, hoping to repeat last season’s stellar 28–7–1 showing and team-wide realization that what really matters is friendship. Led by second-year Head Coach Joakim Flygh, women’s hockey looks to skate back from a challenging 1–14 season start with aggressive equipoise. James Jones—the second-winningest coach in school history—helms the men’s basketball team, whose on-court heroics and sweat-fueled jetpacks have paid off with an 8–2 season start. Fans can catch league-play kickoff against the Brown Bears on January 14 or Penn’s Quakers on February 3 before marveling at the women’s team, cannily led by veteran hoops guru Chris Gobrecht.
Affectionately dubbed the Yale Whale, Ingalls Rink houses hockey games with icy aplomb. Boasting a recently replaced ice surface and cushy locker room, the Whale encourages players to swiftly win in regulation so they can get back to their dorm rooms in the slopes of the on-campus volcano. The 2,800-seat John J. Lee Amphitheater proffers plenty of room for arm-waving fans to cheer in excited abandon or encourage free throws in prudent silence.
