The high-flying acrobats of Cirque du Soleil take over Radio City Music Hall for a gravity-defying extravaganza with Zarkana, now in its final year in New York. The show follows the tribulations of Zark, a magician who has simultaneously lost his powers and the love of his life, as he searches for both in a theater populated with eccentric characters and dazzling performers. A quartet of singing mutants tempts Zark off his path, treating audiences to striking tableaux such as a web-bound spider woman, a snake twisting atop a 30-foot body, and a tank-encased pickled lady whose stunted limbs and drooping eyes send shivers down spines and pangs of homesickness through vacationing picklers. Cirque du Soleil's trademark acrobatics surround dramatic moments, with gravity-mocking athletes sticking one-handed landings on each other's heads, a sinuously flexible contortionist floating across the stage in a hand-balancing solo, and high-wire performers creating a vertiginous playground complete with jump ropes.

The art deco splendor of Radio City Music Hall melds with the show's sets to create an otherworldly atmosphere Time praised as a "perfect union of site and spectacle." Backdrops of oversize gears and coiling snakes rise to the top of the 60-foot proscenium arch while projections show off eerie sand paintings on the surrounding walls. Anthemic rock music by Australian electropop prodigy Nick Littlemore blasts through the pipes of the Mighty Wurlitzer, modified to twist ominously like a sinister American Bandstand dancer.
