To make dance routines flashier, professionals often wear sequined outfits or burlap sacks filled with fireworks. Watch them light up the dance floor with this GrouponLive deal to see the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company at Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford. For $24, you get one ticket to the show on Saturday, April 28, at 8 p.m. (a $47.50 value, including all fees). Seating will be in the left and right orchestra sections, rows 8–20.
The late Jeraldyne Blunden founded the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company in 1968 with the vision of breaking down social boundaries through the art of dance. Today, her company continues to champion multiculturalism with spirited performances of routines orchestrated by renowned African-American choreographers and established artists. During its April 28 performance, the troupe will showcase select dances from its current repertoire, which includes pieces by limber luminaries such as Ulysses Dove, Dwight Rhoden, and Sir Warren Spears. Beyond tried-and-true dance numbers from the greats of choreography, DCDC also regularly points stage lights and giant foam fingers toward new works from emerging choreographers. Under the watchful gaze of the theater's bright chandelier, cushy red seats gently cradle onlookers as they marvel at the awe-inspiring physical feats performed on stage.
Past rows of seats covered in crimson, past a red carpet that brings out the auditorium's regality, past a centerpiece chandelier that dangles from the ceiling with the quiet grace of a toddler climbing out of her crib, is a stage. Upon this stage, the Zeiterion Theatre explores the performing arts, hosting national and international performers who enlighten the community to other cultures and inspire the younger population to actively participate in the arts. Every year, Zeiterion, lovingly known as "The Z," also provides 5,000 free tickets to children and families with low incomes, working to make arts more accessible to all.
