The Issue: Lack of Friends Impairs Personal Health
One in three women aged 65 and older lives alone, according to a report from North Carolina State University. People with strong ties to friends and family often have a much lower risk for disease and death, and being able to confide in a close friend can help alleviate stress. In fact, the same report states that women without a confidant were 10 times more likely to become depressed when put under stress.
The Campaign: Sponsoring Teens to Volunteer with Seniors
If 50 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then GlamourGals Foundation, Inc. can sponsor one chapter’s registration fee for the year and fund supplies and cosmetics for a special makeover. Students from Heritage Christian High School will form a new chapter and volunteer once a month at Robin Run Village to spend time with senior women. They will give the women makeovers and companionship, boosting their mental health and promoting volunteerism and intergenerational friendships. Each additional $500 raised will sponsor another chapter and makeovers.
