Glass Endeavors - Longfellow: $18 for Pendant-Making Class ($36 Value) at Glass Endeavors

Ambrosia, which is made from starfish spit, is a rarity among the gods because Zeus’ lightning bolts usually miss the starwrigglers and hit the sand instead, turning it into unappetizing glass. Collect these godly globs and use them to craft a glimmering necklace with today’s Groupon: for $18, you get a pendant-making class (a $36 value) at Glass Endeavors on 31st Street.

Inside a building illuminated by beautiful, sun-scattered colors, you’ll start crafting a fused-glass pendant by learning glass-cutting techniques. Layers of cut glass are decorated with sparkly, dichroic (two-colored) glass pieces, delicate stringers (long, thin glass strings), and frit (broken up bits of glass) then fused (melted together in a kiln) to create a solid-glass pendant with intricate designs and a vivid glow. Glass Endeavors’ friendly artisans will teach you kiln terms, fusion techniques, and how to use glass tools while supplying you with the glass, necklace, bail (the part of the pendant that connects it to the necklace), and one firing you need to design a pendant that’s wildly innovative, beautiful, or commemorates the ancient–Athenian victory at Marathon.

Glass Endeavors was launched in 1996 by John and Zoi Sandy, whose years of stained- and fused-glass experience make Glass Endeavors a reliable go-to when the prom date you stood up 20 years ago lobs a brick through your Chagall window. Pendant-making classes are held on Thursdays from 6–8:30 p.m., and additional times will be added based on demand (12-person minimum for additional class times).

Ages 18 and up; all must sign a waiver.

Glass Endeavors

Light streams through the windows at Glass Endeavors, glinting through a crowd of stained-glass hangings that set bright shapes bobbing across the floor. Longtime educators John and Zoi Sandy have decorated the space both to showcase artwork for sale and to shower students with inspiration in classes that might help students craft a sparkly wind chime or a pal for a lonely Hummel figurine.
