What You'll Get
A perfect table setting requires pristine linens and polished cutlery, except at off-Broadway restaurants where waiters set every table in postapocalyptic Vienna. Avoid avant-garde eating with today’s Groupon: for $69, you get a five-course All-Ontario Tasting Menu for two at Globe Bistro, located in the Danforth (a $140 value). The tasting menu changes nightly and includes the following courses:
- Composed daily soup
- Winter root vegetable salad
- Ontario Lake fish course
- House-butchered meat course
- Choice of artisanal cheese or dessert
Peruse the menu for a sense of what dishes Globe Bistro serves. Though the five-course menu typically sells for $60 per person, chefs gussy-up today’s deal accordingly for Groupon buyers, elevating the value to $70 per person.
Described in the Globe and Mail as “at the forefront of the local food movement,” Globe Bistro’s Executive Chef Kevin McKenna finds inspiration in global flavours to craft dishes using seasonal ingredients almost entirely sourced within Ontario. Following farm-to-fork tradition, McKenna updates the All-Ontario Tasting Menu each evening, treating tandems or two people bound within a donkey costume to a variety of fresh comestibles ranging from house-baked breads to meats butchered and dry-aged in-house. Soups and salads often showcase seasonal produce such as autumn vegetables paired with Canadian oysters or goat’s milk ricotta. Fish and meat courses sate appetites with proteins that may include elk, speckled trout, or pheasant. Dishes can be altered to accommodate dietary needs such as vegetarianism or an all mashed potato diet.
Housed in a former theatre and bowling alley, Globe Bistro’s long, multi-leveled dining room juxtaposes the erstwhile ally’s original hardwood floors and modern furnishings against ornate chandeliers and wall tapestries whose figures seem to dance in the light. During friendly weather, diners may journey onto the rooftop patio while enjoying a quaff from the bistro’s wine selection (not included in today’s deal).

About Globe Bistro
Though he draws his inspiration from global flavours, Executive Chef Dan Sanders crafts Globe Bistro's dishes entirely from locally sourced ingredients. With bread baked and meat dry aged in-house, he creates upscale cuisine such as composed beet salad, braised ox-tail tortellini and elk tartare, dazzling diners with his culinary prowess and imitation of sizzling bacon from within the open kitchen. More than a dozen wines by the glass and hundreds of labels from Globe Bistro's VQA and Wine Spectator award-winning collection, including many bottles from local winemakers, highlight notes of flavour in the dishes.
Meals unfold inside a former theatre and bowling alley whose original floors provide the foundation for Globe Bistro's three-level dining room. There, sumptuous chandeliers illuminate wall tapestries of dancing figures and a stage space for live music and media presentations. The second floor hosts intimate gatherings in the private dining room, and the rooftop patio and wine bar serve snacks and drinks every day starting at 4 p.m. while guests revel in full view of the darkening sky and the intricate pulley system that changes day to night.
