Acne: From A to Zit
Some facials can help clear up acne or its lingering effects. Learn how to prolong the results with our close look at acne.
Pores have many important jobs: emitting sweat, sprouting hair, producing sebum to keep the hair and skin soft, waterproof, and pettable. But when they get clogged with dirt, dead cells, and other debris, they become a breeding ground for acne. The skin’s natural oils may get trapped under the plug, causing a raised bump called a blackhead (when the pore is large and open enough that the material inside gets oxidized) or whitehead (when the pore is nearly closed).
This comedonal acne isn’t painful, or even particularly noticeable. But if the bumps get irritated, or fill with bacteria-fighting pus, then you’ve got inflammatory acne—the big, red pimples that keep sitcom characters home from prom. Even more severe is cystic acne, which occurs when the built-up oils rupture the follicle wall, spreading bacteria deep under the skin. This type of acne takes longer to go away, and penetrates far down enough to damage collagen in the dermis, leading to the “ice-pick” pitting associated with acne scars.
Most people experience comedonal and inflammatory acne at some point in their lives, particularly during adolescence. Though it might be a nuisance, skin-deep zits generally don’t scar and can be treated with over-the-counter products, some of which can even be incorporated into a spa facial. (Look for products that use pore-clearing salicylic acid if you’ve got blackheads and whiteheads, or bacteria-killing benzoyl peroxide if you’re dealing with redness and pus.) It’s also sometimes possible to clear up acne through a change in habits, since outbreaks may be caused by environmental factors such as being in the sun too much or using beauty products that irritate the skin.

Just relax, leave your worries at the door and let me take care of you!!
What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?
The Goddess Facial is a custom and highly comprehensive facial. After a thorough consultation and skin analysis, I will select the products that are best suited for your skin type and goals. Thorough cleansing starts the treatment, followed by a treatment or combination of treatments designed to exfoliate and/or nourish your skin. Some people think this is the best part of the treatment, as it may include light steam, and ALWAYS includes a blissful shoulder massage! Next are extractions (if needed) to rid the skin of impurities that can lead to future blemishes. Soothing treatments/masks follow, to calm the skin and induce that beautiful glow. Treatments products addressing specific concerns, hydration and moisture, and of course, sunscreen finish the 60+ minute slice of heaven.
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
One of my childhood friends remembers going to the local drugstore with me, where we grew up, and spending hours poring over the lip glosses when we were in Junior High! But, my true passion developed after a layoff from the personal-growth-training industry in 1997. I attended massage school and started work at a small skin care salon in Los Angeles. Working alongside estheticians, I developed a keen interest in the work of skin care. A couple of years later I attended esthetic school myself, was licensed, and began my career as an esthetician. After 15 years working there, I decided I could best serve my clients in my own studio, creating every element of their experience myself, from the products I use and sell, to the peaceful and pretty ambiance of my space.
The interior of a business can affect how its customers feel. What kind of décor do you use to help make your clients feel pampered and at ease?
My space is peaceful and pretty! I have chosen elements for their function, of course, but also to convey the feeling of comfort. My aqua and red color scheme combines relaxation and cheerfulness. My signature red gerbera daisy is a welcome reminder that life is beautiful. I’ve incorporated many feminine touches, especially in my consultation area, while still keeping the space welcoming to gentlemen as well. When clients visit for the first time they often comment that it’s “so pretty”, “so cheerful”, “love the colors” and “I feel at home”. Just what I was hoping for!!
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn’t cover?
I am truly honored that my clients trust me with their skin! I never forget that there are so many choices out there, and they CHOOSE ME! Every single treatment, from a quick wax to my most extensive facial treatment, is done with gratitude and love in my heart and hands. I am blessed and lucky to spend every day doing what I love, and I make sure every client knows how much I appreciate their presence in my studio.
