Fools fall in love in All Shook Up, Joe DiPietro’s Elvis-infused song-and-dance version of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Fresh off a prison stint for unlicensed coolness, hip-swiveling Chad loosens up a tight-laced Midwestern town when he rumbles in singing “Roustabout” with his towering pompadour as greasy as his treasured motorcycle. Local mechanic Natalie finds herself overcome with infatuation, which she expresses through “One Night With You.” Unfortunately, Chad only has eyes for the haughty Sondra and lets her know by smooth-talking her through the sweet lines of “Teddy Bear.” Meanwhile, Natalie’s best friend, Dennis, is harboring some unrequited feelings of his own, and Mayor Matilda and Sheriff Earl, the totalitarian no-fun-niks in charge, set their sights on quashing the rock-and-roll revolution. What follows is a heart-swapping game of musical mates, complicated by multiple misunderstandings and a healthy dose of cross-dressing.
PLATO at the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre
Opened in 1971, Golden Apple Dinner Theatre matches the dramatics on stage with executive chef Frank Caldwell’s seasonal menu of tender steaks, tangy pulled-pork sandwiches, and succulent chicken marsala in mushroom sauce. Vegetarian entrees are also available upon request, and smaller appetites can fill up on spinach-and-artichoke dip, coconut shrimp, or a nacho platter. Rounding out the offerings are specialty desserts and cocktails, such as the Lisa Marie, a blend of peach vodka, peach juice, and lemon-lime soda served in a mason jar. After meals finish, eyes find their way to the stage, which sits at the head of a horseshoe-shaped theater, with a main floor and two seating tiers.
