Ten years ago, a 30-year-old man walked into a one-room Amish schoolhouse and opened fire, killing five girls before taking his own life. In a decision that sent shock waves across the world, the Amish community later that same day forgave his crime and offered aid to his grieving widow. The Amish Project is a fictional exploration of that shooting and the path of compassion forged in its devastating wake. Originally staged in 2008 at the New York International Fringe Festival, The Amish Project opened off-Broadway in 2009, at which time The New York Times called it "a remarkable piece of writing." A provocative and heartbreaking story of forgiveness, this powerful production can now be seen at Chicago's Athenaeum Theatre.
