Sidney Johnson was an 18-year-old plantation worker in Georgia who in 1918 shot and killed the abusive plantation owner who had repeatedly beaten him. In the weeks of rioting and lynching that followed, Mary Turner -- a 19-year-old black woman who was eight months pregnant -- was killed by a mob after protesting the violence. A Small Oak Tree Runs Red, by playwright Lekethia Dalcoe, takes place in a realm between reality and purgatory, where Turner and Johnson struggle to make sense of their past so they can move on and be at peace. This play makes its world premiere at the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago.
