What You'll Get
With a sharp style that looked equal parts mad scientist and Colonel Sanders, and an avant-garde "dirty" trumpet sound full of beats, gurgles, growls and half-valve effects, Lester Bowie left an indelible mark on the jazz world and beyond (David Bowie even wrote the song "Looking for Lester" after him -- a track Lester Bowie himself played on). Fronting his legendary Brass Fantasy bands, Bowie's cheeks would puff as he made his trumpet holler and wail, performing soulful interpretations of everything from jazz standards to doo-wop classics to Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson pop radio hits. For this musical tribute at Tribeca Performing Arts Center, musical director Bob Stewart will lead a program featuring an array of talented NYC musicians and vocalists, several of whom are Brass Fantasy alumni.
