The creative high of the Harlem Renaissance gave way to the devastating low of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, and Blues for an Alabama Sky captures the spirit of this unique period in history -- exploring the music, culture and hardships of the time through the eyes of four friends facing turning points in their lives. Gorgeous blues singer Angel's lost her job at the famed Cotton Club, along with her best friend Guy, a costumer who dreams of designing dresses for Josephine Baker in Paris. Their neighbor Delia is trying to open a family planning clinic, while their friend Sam, a doctor, works at Harlem Hospital and delivers bootleggers' babies on the side. Playwright Pearl Cleage's landmark drama remains as timely today as when it first premiered in 1995, and will serve as the centerpiece for a Chicago celebration of the music, art, language, and impact of the Harlem Renaissance. The tickets identified in this promotion are made available through Goldstar.
