What You'll Get
Stravinsky's groundbreaking ballet Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) caused a near riot during its 1913 Paris premiere, thanks to its unsettling ritualistic movements and innovative folk-influenced rhythms. (And all of this happened before they reached the scene in which a girl is chosen to dance herself to death to appease the pagan gods!) Now the San Francisco Symphony is tackling this monumental work under the baton of Susanna Mälkki, who scored rave reviews last season for bringing out the orchestra's "serenity and wit, lyricism and rawness, whispering delicacy and harrowing abandon" (San Francisco Classical Voice). The evening kicks off with Stravinsky's Scherzo fantastique and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, the latter of which features pianist Garrick Ohlsson, an SF Symphony fave whose artistry combines "strength, sensitivity and stylistic insight" (San Francisco Chronicle). The tickets identified in this promotion are made available through Goldstar.
