What You'll Get
A boisterous and vibrant portrait of love in a nontraditional family, La Cage Aux Folles has been one of Broadway's biggest hits for more than 30 years, earning nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Revival. Georges and Albin, a gay couple who run and star in a popular St. Tropez drag show, find their domestic peace shattered when Georges' son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a right-wing politician who wants to shut the show down. The glittery, madcap spectacle that ensues celebrates family values, unconditional love and, above all, the need to be proud of who we are. Based on the 1973 French play by Jean Poiret, La Cage Aux Folles -- which was adapted into the Robin Williams film The Birdcage -- was penned by American Theater Hall of Famer Harvey Fierstein and features a lively score by Tony Lifetime Achievement honoree Jerry Herman. East West Players, the nation's longest-running professional theater of color in the country and the largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work has partnered with the Los Angeles LGBT Center for an epic production that includes a pre-show hour of dancing with music from divas like Katy Perry and Beyonce, while inside a comic drag act will welcome audiences 15 minutes before show time.
