What You'll Get
Romantic Russian art songs -- the most passionate works of the country's best poets set to music by their greatest composers -- are rarely performed in the U.S. But the Russian Chamber Art Society is on a mission to change that, led by founder and artistic director Vera Danchenko-Stern. Now in its 11th year, this acclaimed ensemble offers a variety of concerts at the Embassy of France, featuring Russian- and American-speaking singers, pianists and other top musicians performing pieces by Glinka, Arensky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and more. A wine-and-dessert reception with the artists follows each show.
February 24 @ 7:30pm:
Art songs by Sergei Rachmaninov, Reinhold Glière and Nikolai Medtner, fellow students at the Moscow Conservatory, will be sung in Russian by soprano Jennifer Gliere, great-grandaughter of the composer, and baritone Kevin Wetzel, accompanied by Vera Danchenko-Stern and Genadi Zagor. In addition, Moscow-born violinist Emil Chudnovsky will play two romances for violin and piano, one by Glière and one by Rachmaninov.
